Step #1: Collection
The Collection team maintain the pipes in the community that carry raw sewage to the treatment plant.
Step #2: Pretreatment
The Pretreatment process checks the output of wastewater from local businesses to control the quality of water entering the plant.
Step #3: Headworks and Pumping
Headworks and Pumping are the first step in treating the water upon its arrival at the plant.
Step #4: Primary Treatment
Primary Clarifiers
Step #5.1: Secondary Treatment
Biotowers & Trickling Filters
The wastewater is filtered by being drained through layers of rocks or plastic covered in microorganisms that breakdown contaminants within the water.
Step #5.2: Secondary Treatment
Solids Contact Basins
Waste Water is infused with polymers to assist in clumping (flocculation) smaller particles together.
Step #5.3: Secondary Treatment
Secondary Clarifers
Gravity and time is used to settle particles which are pushed to the center and separated.
Step #6: Disinfection and Effluent
Wastewater is infused with chlorine to kill off most of the remaining biological contaminants and then released out into the Great Salt Lake.
Step #7.1: Solids Treatment
Digesters
Combined with heat and time solids are allowed to incubate, releasing gas and draining liquids to increase concentration of solids.
Step #7.2: Solids Treatment
Belt Filter Presses
Solids are passed between two belts that press out liquids to increase concentration.
Step #7.3: Solids Treatment
Drying Beds
Solids are laid out and turned regularly drying them to be used as mulch on contracted farmer's fields.
Cogeneration
Laboratory
The Lab analyzes samples from throughout the process to determine treatment effectiveness and pretreatment compliance.
